Best of the Bygones

One of my favorite pairs of jeans – a pair my mom particularly dislikes – is a torn up, faded thing decorated with little blue birds. I bought it from a shift shop when I was 17 and the holes were decorative – now, five years later, they start at the middle of my shin and end at the bottom of my thighs. A recent painting spree has left gobs of white paint (occasionally in the mysterious shape of thumbprints) all over them, as well as stiffened the bottoms’ frayed edges.

I really love them, but the huge holes at the knee mean that they can be quite chilly sometimes. On my trek to the grocery store yesterday, the fuzzy Christmas knee socks I wore managed to combat that problem, but that they kept falling down. I found myself wishing for garters, then immediately started thinking about all the other clothes of yesteryear that I would really like to see again.

Garters, for starters, make sense. Socks, stockings, whatever, they keep ‘em up, and then you don’t have that weird imprint from waist-high stockings on your tummy. Fantastic.

Yes.

Another thing I’d like is a cloak. Not one of the weirdly intricate, snazzy ones from places catering to people who want to be wizards without the rather important magic bit, but something altogether more hardcore and serious. I’m talking a thick woolen thing lined with fur, buttons from neck to ankle that you could do or undo as needed, interior pockets for your hands, and an adjustable hood. Full-length coats still leave your hands cold unless you have gloves, but a cloak has that locked down. No problems.

Eh. Close.

You guys may not know that I detest skinny jeans (ahem - I detest skinny jeans) but what you almost definitely don’t know is that I strongly prefer flares. I don’t mind jeans fitting snugly around my thighs and bottom, but I really hate it on my calves. And it cuts off circulation. My ideal would be a sort of bell bottom with a higher flare, something that begins to bell above the knee and, rather than the bellbottoms of old, that doesn’t flare enough to house a small animal – just enough to keep loose and airy around my shins.

Yes.

Though I rarely wear dresses, I’d like to see more of them, too. Specifically floor-length day dresses that don’t have a halter top or a strapless thing going on. I think dresses are elegant, like them a lot, and want to be able to wear them when it’s freezing without also having to wear a parka and/or snow boots up to my hips. Dresses now seem short all the time or desperate to bare your shoulders. Maybe I don’t want my shoulders bare. Maybe I want to feel pretty without freezing my bits off. They're really hard to find, though - it seems like at some point the world forgot how to make long dresses that are simultaneously warm and attractive.

Not bad.

Wrapping off this wish list is suspenders. Not because I think they’re especially necessary, what with belts and all, but because I think they’re hot and wouldn’t mind seeing more of them.

Yum.

What about you guys? What fashions do you want to see brought back? Or are there some you want to exist that just don't?

  1. I'd love to have a cloak. As someone who lives in Wisconsin, it is very cold for quite a few months, and I'd like nothing more than to wrap a nice warm cloak around me as I walk to class.

  2. HELL YES TO THE CLOAK!! BRING BACK THE CLOAK!

I would wear one of those bad boys out everywhere I went.
Ever since I watched 'Casanova'(the one with David Tennant in it) I have wanted a cloak so freaking bad. They would be perfect for the crappy, unpredictable English weather.

  3. It seems that we have very similar tastes in clothes. I live in Illinois, so the winter can be quite cold and while I have a down coat, it just doesn't always keep away the cold. Having a cloak to surround myself in would be wonderful.

I also think there should be more long dresses. Winter is cold, but as you said, dresses are pretty and fun. I detest wearing tights, but that seems to be the way to combat the cold when wearing a dress in the winter. That, or leggings, which are also terribly constricting.

To me, it seems the fashion industry focuses on fashion, and not practicality. I don't see why we can't have both.

  4. I really fancy turtle necks and wish they returned as they're elegant and stylish (to me, anyway) yet are practical in winter as you won't need to wear a scarf. I also agree with your point with long dresses as I'm a fan of them too. I usually buy my clothes secondhand and I find it easier finding those types of dresses that way, or online. I wish tule was used (not necessarily thick and over the top, but just enough to add volume and depth to the dress itself) as I'm getting tired of seeing skin-tight dresses acting like morph suits.

    1. Well don't worry, because turtle necks are returning! I don't know where you live, but in topshop they keep popping up and they're probably going into fashion any time soon! So work dat turtle neck gurl!
(and on the tulle thing, omg yes yes yes tulle is my favourite!)

  5. Agreed on all accounts, especially the warm, long, day dress! I kind of hate wearing pants, and I would adore having more dresses in my wardrobe that don't require excessive layering to be worn in winter!

Also, I would add spats to the list of men's fashion accessories that need to come back. For real, how classy/sexy (clexy? sessy?) are spats?

  6. OMG Yes! I live in northeast Florida, where the weather is extremely bipolar, and I was just telling someone today that I am tired of wearing pants and I want to wear my pretty day dresses again, but they're all slightly too short for these last few weeks of winter. If there were floor length dresses that didn't show off shoulders, I would buy them all! I love wearing dresses, but I can't for half of the year, because it's a) too cold for my Floridian body, or b) too rainy for anything classy to look good. But yes, I agree with every single item on this list.
We need to make this happen.

  7. yes yes yes, bring back the ol' suspenders!
I've been wanting to buy some for a number of years but I just never ever had the courage to buy them and wear them (except in the house maybe)
but, maybe I'll go buy some sometime.
afterall, I'm all about being who I want to be this yea. :)

  8. I agree with all of the above! I can't stand skinny jeans. Or skinny jeans on me at least, I think on others they look great, which only adds to my hate of them... (the jeans, not the people) This is why I am attracted to vintage fashion. While I am in no way a 24-7 authentic vintage dresser, I like the options that vintage style gives me. Suspenders? Yes! Cloaks? Yes! Garters? Yes! Dresses? Yes! I say if there are clothes that you want to wear, for fashion or comfort or just to make yourself happy, you should do it. Who cares whether it's "bygone" or no longer "trendy", if you like it then that's all that matters.
While it's certainly annoying that contemporary markets don't always cater to your specific needs (I mean come on, how hard is it to make a dress that falls below the knees???) Luckily we live in a time of vlogs, blogs and the joyous internet, which makes finding items if not simple, then certainly not impossible.

  9. Long full-sleeved dresses. Definitely. I hate shaving.

  10. The cloak and the dress! Yes please! I'm always looking for a long full-sleeved dress but can never find one, so I just don't wear dresses unless it's warm out, which is rare here.

    Have a beautiful day

  11. i definitely agree with the long dresses. I AM SO GLAD YOU CHOOSE COMFORT AND WARMTH OVER FASHION it is important to be warm. i would love long dresses to be in fashion so they'd be available anywhere but they are hard to find. :/

  12. I really like very long scarves, and I plan on having one that's long enough to serve as a hat, scarf and gloves someday. That would be the ideal scarf.

  13. Finally someone who wouldn't give me a strange look for liking flares! (from the knee down) I hate skinny jeans as well, but it's all that shops seem to stock atm. And suspenders/bracers I love too, I keep meaning to wear a pair with my high waisted shorts :)

  14. I bought a pair of flared jeans from and online retailer a couple of years ago and I freaking LOVE them. They're a little bit long for me to wear without a bit of a heel on my shoes (especially in the wet when they just soak up the water) but I try to wear them at every opportunity and I really need to try and get a new pair.

  15. You know, I could actually use some suspenders because there doesn't seem to be a belt that exists to fit me.
And I'm totally down with longer dresses. I'm not sure I could pull off floor-length since I'm pretty short, but I'm totally down with long sleeves and high necks. I get cold, yo.

  16. i love this post. i can't believe there are people out there who hate skinny jeans, love flared jeans, cloaks and elegant long sleeved dresses, like me! :)

i also think dungarees are quite cool. and hats.

comfort is definately more important than fashion.
